The [M 010 / Shang] was the first dynasty in Chinese history. A strong work ethic, in addition to political and religious obligations, ran through all levels of society. The agricultural-based economy was dependent on peasant labor. Labor groups of between 3,000 and 5,000 were responsible for forming the royal armies, as well as building royal tombs and tamped-earth foundations.
